To create a world where science and technology are celebrated...where young people dream of becoming science and technology heroes.
- Dean Kamen, Founder of FIRST
FIRST, meaning "For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology," was founded in 1989. FIRST's mission is to motivate young people to pursue education and career opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and math. It designs accessible, innovative mentor-based programs that build not only science and technology skills and interests, but also self-confidence, leadership, and life skills. With Gracious Professionalism™, knowledge, competition, and empathy are comfortably blended.
"The varsity sport for the mind," FRC combines the excitement of sports with the rigors of science and technology. Under strict rules, limited resources and time limits, teams of 25 students or more are challenged to raise funds, design a team "brand," hone teamwork skills, and build and program robots to perform prescribed tasks against a field of competitors. It's as close to "real-world engineering" as a student can get. Volunteer professional mentors lend their time and talents to guide each team.
